Key in deadlock being tapped with screwdriver lock bumping
Security is most important when it comes to your home and office and possessions therein.  If you happen to loose your keys and become locked out of your home or office, you usually call a locksmith in order to open the lock.  The locksmith may also change the lock key combination to prevent any dishonest finder of the keys gaining access.  It becomes a frightening and dangerous thing to find that an intruder has gained access into you home.

The majority of home owners use the best security in order to render themselves an environment that is as secure as possible.
There is a common danger that is not widely recognised in the community, namely lock bumping which can threaten the security of your home or office.  Craigmore Locksmiths came assist in alleviating this threat, and listed below are a number of preventative measures in respect to lock bumping.

1.  Lock bumping:
Intruders slide a "cop" key into the keyhole and tap the head of the key with a screwdriver or other similar tool.  The tapping or bumping motion triggers the lock pins to split until the door opens. This technique doesn’t make a lot of noise and isn’t hard to do, and almost all tumbler locks are vulnerable to bumping.   This means homeowners need to know how to prevent it.

2. Realities that the home owner should be aware of:

Some people may think it’s too hard for intruders to make a copy key. However, as long as the key matches a certain depth, intruders can copy a key. These keys are usually made at any key-making machine.
Lock bumping break-ins aren’t as easy to spot as more obvious ones. This means that you need to take the necessary steps to keep your home safe. Start by keeping your doors and windows locked all the time.

3.  The following  courses of action will assist preventing lock bumping and in keeping your premises secure:
  • Add additional locks.
Not every lock feature will keep out intruders, but you can make break and entry more difficult.  Start by adding extra locks to your doors.  One option is a chain lock if you don't already have them.  This is just another step to slow down intruders.

Newer locks have a force and pick resistant feature.  These locks have special cylinders that spin rather than turn.  The spinning prevents the lock from turning and opening the door.
  • Residential and commercial security systems.
Never underestimate the power of a high-quality security system for your home. Regardless of what type you have, this system will make you aware when someone attempts a break-in. Most security systems will alert the authorities and scare away intruders. This keeps you and your home more secure. You can even sync your system to your smart phone and keep an eye on your house while you’re away from home.
  • Engage your local locksmith.
Have your local locksmith replace your locks and deadbolts. If you want to save some money, this is the cheaper way to go. A locksmith can add more pins to your locks and make it harder to bump the lock.
  • Replace worn out locks.
If you notice your locks are worn out, replace them immediately.  Locks that are not serviceable make your home more susceptible to break-ins.  You can even install locks that are bump resistant.  If you don't want to install them on your own call your local locksmith to help you.
