Wisdom in having your existing locks changed

When a locksmith "changes" your locks in effect he is "rekeying" your existing locks by changing the internal pins and springs comprising the existing key code and inserting new pins and springs following a new key code and issuing new keys applicable to the new code.  This in effect renders the old keys useless as they will no longer unlock the lock.

You may not think in any preventive measures in your home security since you’ve gone years without an incident. We get so settled into our daily lives that we often forget to take the smallest steps to keep ourselves, our families, and our belongings secure. This should not be the case. Home security should be one of the top priorities on your list since your life depends on it.
One way of making sure that your home is secured is by changing your locks. Changing your locks is actually more important than we think it should be. Especially for those moments when you aren’t 100% sure about the person who has access to your keys.

Below are the top 5 reasons to get your locks changed.

1.  Moving into a new house:
As a new homeowner, one of the first and most important tasks on your list should be to change the locks. You don’t know who the last occupants gave access to the keys to. Even if you were assured that you’re the only one who has the set of keys for the house, there is still no guarantee and you’ll want to make sure that there is no chance that the previous homeowners or their relations have a way of getting into your house.

2.  Loss of key or keys:
Rather than worrying about who might have found your keys and what they might do, it’s best to have your locks changed.

3.  Worn out locks:
Things don’t last forever. Even locks get old and aged and their strength weakens. With this, they might not be able to do their job of securing your home.

4.  Divorce:
Divorce is a very emotionally unsettling thing to happen to a couple. Change your locks if your ex has moved out. It’s a way to ensure your house is totally under your control. So you can sleep with both eyes closed and not smothered in the middle of the night by a scorned ex-lover.

5.  You have loaned your key to someone:
If you’ve loaned your key to a repairman, service provider or even a tenant or you’ve recently remodeled your house, it would be smart to change the locks as a precaution. Even if you get your keys back, they might have it copied giving them access to you house.
