cheap locks versus quality locks

Combination deadlock and entrance set
With regards to locks like anything else, you only get what you pay for.

That’s not to say that the locks available today are of a lesser quality, than the ones built years ago. In fact many locks today, offer conveniences and benefits that were unheard of just a few, short years ago. But many manufacturers have sacrificed quality, in order to meet certain price points. When you buy a home for 200K – 400K, is your best choice to lock it, with a $10 cheap lock? Would you be surprised if that $10 cheap lock didn’t hold up against a physical attack by a burglar? Locks are more affordable than ever, but what have they cut back on, in order to make the cost so low. The answer is quality, and if you are sacrificing quality on cheap locks, your basically throwing your money away.

As locksmiths, we open a large amount of locked doors, on a daily basis. The easiest ones to open, are the ones someone bought from the hardware store. The tolerances and mechanics are loose, making it easy for us to manipulate them. Most of these locks are opened in less than a minute, without leaving a scratch. It makes you wonder, what’s the point? Most people will often ask for some kind of upgrade, after seeing how simple these locks are to open. The same goes for the hardware store deadbolts. Instead of being a solid piece of brass, with a large bolt and “throw”, their components are made from plastic and Die-Cast. Materials like that, are not enough to stop someone from kicking in a door (which is the main function of the deadbolt).

So where is the middle ground? The locks sold at locksmith shops can be expensive, because most locksmiths won’t sell and warranty the cheap hardware store locks. And the cheap ones at the hardware store won’t hold up and provide enough physical protection.

The following is a solution for the use of both types of locks.

Install high quality locksmith grade deadbolts on necessary external doors and then place low quality knobs beneath them, in order to cut down on cost and match them to the same key as the deadbolts.

The reason for doing it this way, was because the main security is coming from the deadbolt, not the doorknob. By installing a really good quality deadbolt and making sure to lock it each day, the door is secure. The doorknob is only used as a secondary locking device and the main protection against physical attacks, falls on the deadbolt.

We consider this a great compromise on price, without having to sacrificing home security.
If you are interested in upgrading deadbolts, contact Craigmore Locksmiths for professional service.

Mechanical locks opposed to smart locks

6/3/2019

Smart lock on door being operated by a mobile phone
In the last few years, smart locks have become quite popular in homes and commercial premises. These locks incorporate modern technology like iris and fingerprint scanners instead of keys. Naturally homeowners, assume that it’s a safer option but is that really true?

The iris, the ring of colour around the pupil of each eye, is the most uniquely identifiable part of your body’s exterior.  Most iris-scanning systems work by snapping a high-res photo of your eyes, isolating the iris portion of the image, then running that through a matching algorithm to see if you are authorised to enter.

Which is the better, more secure option, mechanical or smart locks.

1.  Mechanical locks:
The majority of mechanical locks work when a key is used to activate the locking mechanism, which will give it the ability to lock or unlock. Some very common examples of these mechanical locks are pin tumbler locks, rim locks, and mortice locks. Let’s take a look at the pin-tumbler lock for example.

Pin-Tumbler locks are some of the most common locks used within residential properties. The locking mechanism in these locks features a series of spring-loaded pins that are in turn loaded into cylinders. The cylinders consist of a set of pins that are designated as the key pins and the driver pins. When the correct key is inserted into the locking mechanism the key pins are elevated, which pushes the driver pins upward.

Once the proper key is inserted into the lock, the driver pins and key pins align at the shear line. Then the key can be turned in the lock, to unlock, and sometimes lock, the mechanism. If the wrong key is used, the misalignment of the pins will block the key from being turned because the pins will be bound at the shear line.

The security levels that these locks give homeowners varies. For instance, the deadbolt is one of the most common exterior residential locks. There are usually two main types of deadbolts, single cylinder deadbolts, and double cylinder deadbolts. These locks are known to provide maximum security for homeowners but only if the right ones are used and if they are used in the right way.

Mechanical locks can usually be enhanced by using solid metal strike plates and longer deadbolt throws. You can also invest in locks that are resistant to lock picking, lock bumping and other bypass methods. In addition to these methods, homeowners can make their locks stronger by using security pins within the lock cylinder itself that will make it much harder for anyone to tamper with.

In order to determine how secure a traditional lock will be, a number of factors have to be taken into consideration. These factors include the placement of the lock, how often the lock will be used, as well as whether or not this lock is meant to function alone.

Locks that are meant to be used primarily for exterior doors will function best when they are placed on exterior doors, but they will also work well for interior doors (bathrooms, ect). Although installing a Grade 1 deadbolt on your bathroom door is overkill. However, looking at the opposite spectrum of things, if you install a knob lock on your front door (without adding a deadbolt to it), then you are leaving your home vulnerable to attacks and burglars.

In conclusion mechanical locks are pretty secure if they are used in the right way, and if homeowners have them installed with security in mind. Consult with Craigmore Locksmiths, they have the professional knowledge and foresight that will help homeowners get the best out of their locks.

2.  Smart locks:
To put it simply, smart locks are the automated versions of traditional locks. They too consist of a lock mechanism however, they are operated electronically.

The reason why they are considered ‘smart’ is because they can be operated using smart phones. They also provide unparalleled comfort and ease, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are safer.
Smart locks need electricity to run. This can be a problem in case of a black out. Furthermore, these locks are also susceptible to cyber attacks.

The issue of smart lock security was one that gradually made its way to the foreground of the conversation.  Smart locks made little architectural improvements to the basic design and components of traditional locks, so they each essentially start out on the same security threshold (in most cases). In this sense, most people would think that their smart locks are better than their traditional locks because they are being afforded the same level of security with added features, but this isn’t always the case.

The security of smart locks has been in question since before their inception. It did not become apparent to many people that this was even an issue until after homeowner’s started to acquire smart locks. This might have been because smart locks were not necessarily advertised for their security capabilities, but they were marketed by talking about all the new and cool things that a smart lock could do for an individual’s home. For instance, some smart locks give homeowners the ability to remotely monitor the status of their locks, as well as remotely operate their locks. These features are some of the things that make a smart lock truly unique and the reasons why some people flocked to them.

At the end of the day, no matter which option you go for, you will need services of locksmith professionals. Craigmore Locksmiths offer residential and commercial locksmith services in Adelaide Northern suburbs. Call today for expert advice on both mechanical and smart locks for your home or office.

Various categories of door locks

Mortice lock, deadbolt, entrance set, digital lock, safety alarm

These days, there are a variety of door locks available in the market. From door knob locks to deadbolts and keyless locks, there are various options that you can choose from to ensure the security of your property. Craigmore Locksmiths advise that before you install any type of lock in your home or business, it is vital to learn about the types of locks available on the market today. Whether you want to upgrade the security system of your office or just curious about the latest technology, here you will get useful information about several door locking options.

DOOR HANDLE LOCKS:
This type of lock provides the least security than others. It is a simple lock that is located within the handle of the door. You just need to prevent the handle from rotating, in order to make it work. This type of locks are ideal for bathrooms and entryways within your house, since they are easy to break.

DEADBOLTS:
Deadbolts can significantly increase the security of your place as they utilise a solid metal cylinder that protrudes through the door jamb and into the wall. Deadbolts are generally installed to provide additional security. They require a key to lock them from outside. In most of the residential properties these types of locks render high-end security when properly installed.

KEYLESS LOCKS:
Just as the name implies, keyless locks don’t require any key for entry. The door is locked and unlocked with the help of a code that is entered into a keypad. This adds another level of security. Keyless locks are mostly found in commercial building and other organisations where high level security is required
.
ELECTRIC LOCKS:
Electric locks work like any other lock, but they couldn’t be applied manually. The mechanism of these locks rely in the electronics. People have options whether to operate them using a key or through a code on a keypad.

COMBINATION LOCKS:
There is not much difference in a combination lock and a keyless entry. Here, the keypad functions through a push button mechanism. The keypad on combination locks don’t rely on a digital or electronic coding device, rather it triggers the movement of the deadbolt.
It is apt to say that there is a lock for every door. Whether you want a simple lock inside your home or a high tech electric looking system to protect your business assets, you can easily found any door lock to meet your needs and preference.

If you aren’t sure what type of lock would be best for your door, contact Craigmore Locksmiths. Our professionals are well informed about the various types of locks and their mechanism. Contact today to know more about our services.

lock bumping prevention

Key in deadlock being tapped with screwdriver lock bumping
Security is most important when it comes to your home and office and possessions therein.  If you happen to loose your keys and become locked out of your home or office, you usually call a locksmith in order to open the lock.  The locksmith may also change the lock key combination to prevent any dishonest finder of the keys gaining access.  It becomes a frightening and dangerous thing to find that an intruder has gained access into you home.

The majority of home owners use the best security in order to render themselves an environment that is as secure as possible.
There is a common danger that is not widely recognised in the community, namely lock bumping which can threaten the security of your home or office.  Craigmore Locksmiths came assist in alleviating this threat, and listed below are a number of preventative measures in respect to lock bumping.

1.  Lock bumping:
Intruders slide a "cop" key into the keyhole and tap the head of the key with a screwdriver or other similar tool.  The tapping or bumping motion triggers the lock pins to split until the door opens. This technique doesn’t make a lot of noise and isn’t hard to do, and almost all tumbler locks are vulnerable to bumping.   This means homeowners need to know how to prevent it.

2. Realities that the home owner should be aware of:

Some people may think it’s too hard for intruders to make a copy key. However, as long as the key matches a certain depth, intruders can copy a key. These keys are usually made at any key-making machine.
Lock bumping break-ins aren’t as easy to spot as more obvious ones. This means that you need to take the necessary steps to keep your home safe. Start by keeping your doors and windows locked all the time.

3.  The following  courses of action will assist preventing lock bumping and in keeping your premises secure:
  • Add additional locks.
Not every lock feature will keep out intruders, but you can make break and entry more difficult.  Start by adding extra locks to your doors.  One option is a chain lock if you don't already have them.  This is just another step to slow down intruders.

Newer locks have a force and pick resistant feature.  These locks have special cylinders that spin rather than turn.  The spinning prevents the lock from turning and opening the door.
  • Residential and commercial security systems.
Never underestimate the power of a high-quality security system for your home. Regardless of what type you have, this system will make you aware when someone attempts a break-in. Most security systems will alert the authorities and scare away intruders. This keeps you and your home more secure. You can even sync your system to your smart phone and keep an eye on your house while you’re away from home.
  • Engage your local locksmith.
Have your local locksmith replace your locks and deadbolts. If you want to save some money, this is the cheaper way to go. A locksmith can add more pins to your locks and make it harder to bump the lock.
  • Replace worn out locks.
If you notice your locks are worn out, replace them immediately.  Locks that are not serviceable make your home more susceptible to break-ins.  You can even install locks that are bump resistant.  If you don't want to install them on your own call your local locksmith to help you.

Wisdom in having your existing locks changed

6/1/2019

Keys on gold house key ring
When a locksmith "changes" your locks in effect he is "rekeying" your existing locks by changing the internal pins and springs comprising the existing key code and inserting new pins and springs following a new key code and issuing new keys applicable to the new code.  This in effect renders the old keys useless as they will no longer unlock the lock.

You may not think in any preventive measures in your home security since you’ve gone years without an incident. We get so settled into our daily lives that we often forget to take the smallest steps to keep ourselves, our families, and our belongings secure. This should not be the case. Home security should be one of the top priorities on your list since your life depends on it.
One way of making sure that your home is secured is by changing your locks. Changing your locks is actually more important than we think it should be. Especially for those moments when you aren’t 100% sure about the person who has access to your keys.

Below are the top 5 reasons to get your locks changed.

1.  Moving into a new house:
As a new homeowner, one of the first and most important tasks on your list should be to change the locks. You don’t know who the last occupants gave access to the keys to. Even if you were assured that you’re the only one who has the set of keys for the house, there is still no guarantee and you’ll want to make sure that there is no chance that the previous homeowners or their relations have a way of getting into your house.

2.  Loss of key or keys:
Rather than worrying about who might have found your keys and what they might do, it’s best to have your locks changed.

3.  Worn out locks:
Things don’t last forever. Even locks get old and aged and their strength weakens. With this, they might not be able to do their job of securing your home.

4.  Divorce:
Divorce is a very emotionally unsettling thing to happen to a couple. Change your locks if your ex has moved out. It’s a way to ensure your house is totally under your control. So you can sleep with both eyes closed and not smothered in the middle of the night by a scorned ex-lover.

5.  You have loaned your key to someone:
If you’ve loaned your key to a repairman, service provider or even a tenant or you’ve recently remodeled your house, it would be smart to change the locks as a precaution. Even if you get your keys back, they might have it copied giving them access to you house.

how to improve your home security

Home with security doors
A home owner needs to protect and secure their most valuable asset, namely their home.  The home owner wants to to keep their property safe at all costs.  At Craigmore Locksmiths we provide a range of services in relation to changing your locks, key combination changes and replacement, emergency repairs and other security options to ensure the security of your home.

Upgrading the existing security of your home is a major factor in establishing a safe and protected property, worry free.  Listed below are a number of employable security upgrades to achieve home security improvements.

1. Deficiencies in your home security:
Try to think about your home and its current security.  Put yourself in the place of a burglar.  What would be the easiest way into your house?  What are the places with the lowest security?  Identifying these is the first step in improving the security of your property.

2.  Make it a habit to always lock your doors and windows:
Many people forget to lock their doors and windows as they become used to the idea that their home is safe.  However, especially if you live on the lowest floors of a residential property, a burglar would most definitely check these.  A lapse in judgement for just a moment could cost you a lot.  Always lock the doors and windows even if you are going out for a little as 5 minutes.

3.  Secure and lock your garage and balcony:
Locking the garage door and the balcony when you are going out or during the night is very important. Both provide easy access into your home and require extra caution. Do not forget to lock the door that leads from the garage into the house. This could save you a lot of regrets in the future.

4.  Change the locks:
When you are moving in you rarely think about changing the locks of your new home, and this is normal. However, a potential problem with these is the fact that you do not know who else could have a copy of your keys. To be safe, it is better to change the locks as soon as you move in. Same rule applies to lost keys. If you lose your key it is better to change the locks immediately as you never know who might have found it.

5.  Leave the lights on:
When you are leaving your home, it is a good idea to leave the lights on. This will make a burglar hesitate as they are not sure if you are home or not. Another option is to invest in automatic lights, or leave the TV or stereo on.

6.  Close the curtains:
When you are leaving your home keep the curtains closed, especially in rooms with expensive equipment. If burglars do not know what equipment you have they would be more likely to skip your property.

7.  Contact the Police:
If you notice something strange around your neighbourhood or property, like an unknown car passing through several times a day or being parked for a very long time on your street then report it. This rule holds both for your own home and your neighbours’ properties.

8.  Security Systems:
You can install a security lightning in your yard which will make it much harder for a burglar to enter the premises without being seen. In addition, getting an alarm system could also improve the security of your home substantially and deter a burglar from proceeding once in the house. Another factor that could increase the safety is putting bars on the windows, which will prevent someone from breaking in.

9.
   Don't leave a spare key:
Do not leave a spare key around your home, especially hidden in obvious locations like the welcome mat.

10.  Install a safe:
Buying a safe could be a very good investment. It can protect not only valuable belongings but also paperwork, cheques and financial records.

This advice depends on having quality locks installed in the first place and continuously monitoring them, so ensure they are functioning properly. Upgrading your home security is an essential step if you believe your home to be inadequately protected. As an experienced locksmiths, Craigmore Locksmiths can deliver exactly that.  Contact us today to discuss which of our services is most suitable to you.

Safe combination changes

5/31/2019

Commercial safes three
For many years most safe lock services were performed by factory trained service technicians only, but in increasingly large numbers of locksmiths are performing this service.

combination locks as  whole are opened by dialling a series of numbers (a combination).  Except for some inexpensive  and small models, a combination lock does not lock the safe, it merely controls the outside lever which operates the bolts that extend through the door into the safe walls.  The bolts are the real lock.

When the lock is in the closed position the lever is locked with bolts extended.  When the lock is in the open position, the lever is released and may be turned to withdraw the bolts and open the door.

The owner of a safe will change its combination to prevent anyone who knows the combination from using it to open the safe.  There are many reasons for this.
  1. If it is a new safe the owner would want the combination changed from the factory setting to his own.  The same factory settings are often used on all combination locks and therefor offer little security.  They are used only to permit easy handling of the lock during delivery, installation and testing.
  2. When a safe is purchased second hand, the owner would want the existing combination changed so that the former owner could no longer open the safe.
  3. If the owner fired an employee who knew the combination, he would want to change it so the former employee could no long open the safe.
The owner may suspect a security leak, an employee may have divulged the combination to untrustworthy persons outside the firm.  Obviously, the combination has to be changed to protect the owner.

To change a combination lock you need to know some general information such as the type of lock you are dealing with, not just if it is mechanical or an electronic lock, but what type of device the combination lock is installed on, and how that affects what will need to be done to change the combination lock.

Listed below are the procedures for both manual and digital safe combination changing.  There are numerous brands of both manual and digital safes with numerous different combination changing technics.  The following change processes are limited  to one common brand.

Manual dial safe combination change:
Sargent and Greenleaf are popular safe combination locks however different brands have different protocols.
  1. Open your safe.
  2. With the safe door open, manipulate the dial using the existing combination. However, you will be moving the numbers to the change mark (the mark to the left of the 12 o’clock mark used for opening the safe).
  3. Leave the safe dial on the last number in your combination.
  4. Insert your change key into the keyhole on the interior side of the safe door.
  5. Turn the safe key and do not over torque the key in the keyway.
  6. Dial your new combination using the change mark, use the proper rotational process you would use to open the safe.
  7. Leave the safe dial on the last number of your new combination.
  8. Turn and remove the change key.
  9. Test the new combination several times while the door is still open.

Digital safe combination change:
The combination change protocol for a Sargent and Greenleaf code pad is as follows:
  1. When the door is open, press “7”, then “4”, then “*” (the asterisk button).
  2. The lock will be moved into programming mode, but you still need to insert the current safe combination, then press “#” (the pound button).
  3. Wait until you have heard five distinct beeps.
  4. Indicate you want to change the safe combination by pressing “1”, then “*” (the asterisk button).
  5. Insert the new code, then press “#” (the pound button).
  6. Wait until you have heard three distinct beeps.
  7. Insert the new code a second time, then press “#” (the pound button).
  8. Wait until you have heard three distinct beeps, this will indicate that both the first and second codes match.
  9. The digital lock will now be out of programming mode.
  10. Before closing your safe, check to see that the new combination is working as expected.

Changing combinations on a safe can be complex, therefor when in doubt it is best to call a locksmith such as Craigmore Locksmiths and have the safe combination changed safely and professionally.

Common Lock operating issues

Lockwood paradigm commercial deadlock
Many locks eventually become inoperable due to lack of maintenance or foresight in recognising a potential locking problem which gradually becomes worse eventually rendering the lock totally inoperable thus locking us out or being unable to lock the door.

The two greatest enemies of locks are paint and oil.  Paint is usually slapped over a lock by a careless painter seizing the locking mechanism.  Oil is usually introduced into a lock by an amateur in the mistaken belief that this would cure the lock problem.  A lock should be perfectly clean and that the only lubricant that one should use is graphite or a specialised silicone based lock lubricant.

At Craigmore Locksmiths we offer a wide variety of heavy duty locks and door hardware as well as other security solutions to maintain the security of a residence or office and ensuring the protection of the contents.

Although some simple lock issues can be fixed by a minor adjustment,  locks involving more serious problems and high quality door knobs or lock sets are better handled by an experienced locksmith who carries the necessary equipment  and parts to professionally carry out the lock repair or replacement.

The Following are some common lock problem issues affecting both residential and commercial premises.
  1. The door latch will not engage or lock when then door is shut:  If a door latch does not operate smoothly, the latch bolt on the door may not be lined up properly with the strike plate on the door jamb.  The bolt could be positioned above, below or to one side of the strike plate.  Repairs range from making minor latch adjustments to repositioning the whole door.
  2. The cylinder key will not turn:  Providing you are using the correct lock key, the door could be misaligned, the lock could be frozen or stuck with dirt particles or there could be an internal mechanical failure.  In these cases it would be wise to initially try lubricating the lock with graphite and then try operating the lock numerous times.
  3. The whole cylinder within the lock rotates:  A number of contributing factors could be responsible, namely a broken or disengaged internal tail piece, screws securing the lock face plate have become loose.  Rectifying them problems would entail disassembly of the lock and tightening of the screws.
  4. Deadbolt will not operate:  Ensure that the deadbolt throw bolt is travelling smoothly through the strike plate cavity without any obstruction.  If this is operating correctly then the problem could lie with the internal mechanism  which could  be in need of repair or replacement.
  5. Cylinder key broken off within the lock:  Provided there exists a portion of the key extended out beyond the lock face, use needle nose pliers to take hold of the portion of the protruding key and pull the key straight out.  It the key is broken within the key hole, engaging  a profession locksmith with the necessary extractor tools would be the best alternative in removing the broken key and avoiding potential damage to the lock.

Choosing a locksmith can be irritating and time-consuming. You want the best service without having to spend hours researching options – especially in an emergency situation, Craigmore Locks are available to attend to any lock or security problem within your home or commercial premises.  For trustworthy prompt and professional lock repair, installation or upgrade we are only a phone call away.

Master Key Systems

Restricted LG7 key blanks
When a landlord owns a house with several rented apartments he usually wants to have a master key that will let him enter each apartment in case of an emergency such as fire, or water pipe breakage.  However, he does not want the locks set up alike so that each tenant can open his neighbour's door.  When cylinder locks meet the landlord's needs in this way they are said to be set up under a master key system.

The whole secret of master keying is this:  Each mastered cylinder contains not only a set of upper and lower pins, but also a middle set of pins which line up at the shear line, (the point where a lock’s bottom pin has been raised to the correct position to allow the lock plug to rotate within the lock cylinder) when the master key is inserted.

It is not always necessary to have a master pin in every pin chamber.  Master pins are only used in those chambers where the master key fails to raise the lower pins to the shear line.

A master key system is created by scientific, mathematical formulas that provide an orderly progression of key cut combinations to prevent the interchange of keys, ensure accuracy and provide smooth dependable operation.

A master key rank is referred to as that following:

CHANGE KEY:  A key which operates only one cylinder or a group of keyed alike cylinders in a master key system.  The lock that the change key opens will also open with the use of a master key above that rank.

MASTER KEY:  A key which operates all master keyed locks or cylinders in a group. Each lock or cylinder usually operated by its own change key .
The name of that system will be a master key system. ( MK ) .  In some systems this will be the highest ranking key.

GRAND MASTER KEY: The key which operates 2 or more separate groups of locks which are each operated by a different master key .
The name of that system will be a grand master key system. ( GMK )
This key will operate every master system under it, and subsequent change keys under those systems.

GREAT GRAND MASTER KEY:  The key which operates 2 or more separate groups of locks which are each operated by a different grand master key .
The name of that system will be a great grand master key system. ( GGMK ) .
You can go on and on with this system and make it more accessible to more groups of locks and keys .
Many master key systems consist of restricted keys, which incorporate a design registered keyway that provides legal protection against unauthorised duplication of keys. The Guild 7 restricted key system incorporating LG7 profiles are restricted to authorised members of The Locksmiths Guild of Australia.
